Should I Finish School?

As a mother, there are probably a thousand things you could be doing for the 40 hours a week you are in school. Daycare is expensive, and you may not trust everyone with your child. It's much easier to fully take on your new responsibility as a mother, quit school and raise your baby full-time, right?

The question is: Is school important enough to sacrifice the time and effort that it takes to finish?
The answer is: YES!

You know that it is your responsibility to provide for your child. You may have help from your parents, the baby's father, welfare or child support but please know that the burden of the responsibility falls on YOU, not the father, not your parents, YOU. It may be unfair, but that's the way it is. Without at least a high school diploma (or GED), you are limiting yourself to the lowest paying jobs out there. You may have dreamt of becoming a doctor or lawyer, or even an entertainer, or business owner. Without at least the basic K-12 education (or GED), no one will give you the time of day. If you choose to go to college, excellent! Many employers prefer college educations, and with a degree in any field, you are making yourself valuable to potential employers. The bottom line is that you must at least finish high school or get your GED if you are going to move closer to your goals and dreams.

There are some situations where life at home makes it almost impossible to for some teens to go to school. Some are caring for their brothers or sisters on top of being parents themselves, and some are dealing with other serious issues such as abuse, neglect and homelessness. If you are experiencing any of these issues, reach out to your community for help. There are programs in EVERY State that will assist young mothers as they continue their education. Some programs provide daycare and transportation, and some will even help out with a small allowance while you attend to help make ends meet. Never accept defeat!

To put it simply, it's about what you want for yourself and your child. Do you want the dream life that you see on TV? Do you want a fabulous life, where you follow your dreams and make them come true? Welfare will not pay for that. Get up and get energized. Go back to school, learn a trade, get your GED so you'll have the tools necessary to handle your business.
